THE ORANGE COUNTY LEARNING DISABILITIES ASSOCIATION PRESENTS |
|
UNDERSTANDING THE NEUROBIOLOGY OF ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOR This seminar is concerned with aggression, conduct disorder, anti-social behavior, delinquency, impulsivity, violence and psychopathy as well as learning disabilities, and the role that nutritional intervention plays in the remediation of these types of behavior. Research has shown that people who have anti-social behavior many times exhibit brain dysfunction leading to extreme "dyslogic." Many exhibit a lack of insight and foresight, a lack of empathy for animals and people, a low anger threshold, poor abstract thinking and social skills, a lack of fear and remorse, impulsivity, and an inability to realize the consequences of their actions or to learn from experience.1 Targeted nutritional intervention can change attitudes and improve the brain dysfunction that underlies much delinquency and criminality. These changes will allow us to truly rehabilitate offenders and stop "at risk" children from getting into trouble. 1www.CrimeTimes.org William J. Walsh, Ph.D. biochemist, Director of Research at the Pfeiffer Treatment Center, Warrenville, Ill. Dr. William J. Walsh is founder and Chief Scientist of the Health Research Institute and Pfeiffer Treatment Center in Warrenville, IL. He received his Ph.D. from Iowa State University in chemical engineering. Dr. Walsh has authored more than 200 journal articles and scientific reports and has been granted 6 patents. He has participated in more than 25 major forensics studies and has performed specialized chemical analyses at the request of the FBI, Scotland Yard, coroners, medical examiners, and police departments. He has presented his research on autism and biochemical causes of violence to the U.S. Senate, the National Institutes of Health, the American Psychiatric Association, the Surgeon General's Office, and numerous other scientific and mental-health organizations. Jeremy E. Kaslow, M.D., Internist, Allergist, and Immunologist, private practice, Santa Ana,. CA Jeremy E. Kaslow, M.D., is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology. He is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians and a fellow in the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology. A graduate of UCLA School of Medicine with post-graduate training at UC Irvine, he has been in private practice for over 15 years serving Orange County adults and children. He is the president of the non-profit International Foundation for Nutrition and Health, has lectured on nutrition, biochemistry, cardiovascular disease, immune function, and foundational health, and is a contributing author to books on endocrinology, cardiology, and enzymes. He actively loves golf, basketball, and tennis but his true passion is optimizing the genetic potential of his patients. Stephen Shoenthaler, Ph.D., Professor, Sociology and Criminal Justice, California State University, Stanislaus, CA Dr. Stephen Schoenthaler has been researching the effects of nutrition on behavior as a professor at the Calif. State University, Stanislaus for the past 24 years. His honors include being the Outstanding Research Scholar at his University in 2002, "The Linus Pauling Award" in 2000; and being a research partner of Nobel laureate Linus Pauling from 1988 to 1993. In 1991, the BBC reported that Dr. Schoenthaler was one of the leading experts in the world on the effects of nutrition and behavior. His research has appeared on all of the major US networks, including several television specials, and he is one of the most published scientists in this field world-wide. UNDERSTANDING THE NEUROBIOLOGY OF ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOR PROGRAM 8:30am - 9:00am Welcome 9:00am - 10:15am William J. Walsh, Ph.D., biochemist, Director of Research at the Pfeiffer Treatment Center, Warrenville, Ill. BRAIN CHENISTRY AND BEHAVIOR DISORDERS Over the past 25 years, we have studied more than 10,000 persons with serious behavior disorders and have amassed a database of more than 1.5 million individual chemistry assays of blood, urine and hair. This population exhibits a high incidence of biochemical imbalances including several that directly impact synthesis or functioning of brain neurotransmitters. The different chemical patterns associated with disorders such as conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, antisocial personality disorder, episodic rage disorder, and ADHD will be described. Chemistry test results for Charles Manson, Henry Lee Lucas, Richard Speck, Ludwig van Beethoven, and several other notable cases will be summarized. 10:30am - 11:45 am Stephen Shoenthaler, Ph.D., Professor, Sociology and Criminal Justice, California State University, Stanislaus, CA THE SCIENTIFIC STUDIES BEHIND NUTRITIONAL INTERVENTION TO IMPROVE BEHAVIOR Over the past 25 years, numerous studies have demonstrated that violence and impaired learning are caused in part by abnormal brain function that coincides with abnormal blood chemistry. When nutritional intervention is used as well as certain behavior therapies, blood chemistries normalize, brain function is ameliorated, and learning capacity improves. Violence typically ceases within days. 11:45am - 1:00pm LUNCH 1:00pm - 2:15pm Jeremy E. Kaslow, M.D., Internist, Allergist, and Immunologist, private practice, Santa Ana, CA OPTIMIZING BEHAVIOR THROUGH OPTIMIZING BIOCHEMISTRY Research and clinical experience proves that behavior and brain function are directly related to biochemistry. This presentation will provide a basic understanding and case histories to this successful and practical approach. 2:30pm - 3:45pm William J. Walsh, Ph.D. biochemist, Director of Research at the Pfeiffer Treatment Center, Warrenville, Ill. INDIVIDUALIZED NUTRIENT THERAPY AND BEHAVIOR DISORDERS Nutrient therapies for correcting imbalances associated with the various DSM-IV behavior diagnoses are described. Treatment protocols for normalizing metal metabolism, methylation, pyrrole chemistry, toxic metal levels, absorption, and other key chemical systems will be presented. A published outcome study of 207 assaultive and destructive patients of the Pfeiffer Treatment Center will be summarized. 4:00pm - 5:00 Discussion Drs. William J. Walsh and Stephen Schoenthaler ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOR IS OF CONCERN TO:
